Palm Springs, California
Palm Springs, California, was originally composed of several small groups of Indians. In 1896, the Agua Caliente Reservation was founded by the United States Government. In 1877, the Southern Pacific Railroad established its railway through to the Pacific Ocean. The first non-Indian settlers were John McCallum and his family in 1884. Palm Springs was officially granted its name in 1853, when topographers found an oasis of palm trees and springs in the area. Growth truly hit Palm Springs during World War II, when it was made home to the Desert Hospital in 1951.

For great wilderness and camping experiences, Palm Springs has Demuth Park, Sunrise Park, Lake Cahuilla, Francis Stevens Park, and the Coachella Valley Preserve.
